Community Needs Series —  Unit 2 of 8: Participation

How Are We Connected?

A community is more than a shared zip code. It is the network of relationships, activities, and organizations that give people a sense of belonging and mutual support. So, how do the respondents participate the Chinese American community in Western New York?

The Numbers Are Honest

More than half of respondents participated in at least one Chinese community activity in year 2024. That is encouraging. But regular participation — at least once a month — was only 18.8%. And 22.3% reported never participating at all.

What stands out most is this: 32.6% of respondents said they are interested in getting involved with community organizations but are not currently doing so. That is nearly one in three people — present, interested, and not yet engaged.

Culture Is the Entry Point

Of all the activities offered in 2024, cultural and festive events were overwhelmingly the most popular, participated by 70.5% of the respondents. Educational and career programs came in second at 32.1%, followed closely by sports and recreational activities at 31.7%.

Culture is not a luxury — it is the front door. It is where trust is built and where first-time participants become regulars.

Roles of Participation

Among the respondents, 35.7% are organization members and 35.3% are volunteers of these organizations. About 60% have volunteered. These are real contributors. The challenge is that regular volunteering rates is low, only 11% in the Chinese community, while it is 17% in the boarder community. The gap between interest and action is wide.

The Opportunity

As mentioned at the beginning, the one-third, who want to participate but haven’t yet, are not a lost cause. They are a waiting constituency. We need to work hard to convert that latent interest into real community energy.

Next week: Next, we get specific: the most common needs that respondents reported for themselves over the past three years — and what they tell us about where a community center can make the most immediate difference.
